Language problems in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a specific profile?

In September 2004, I started working on my Ph.D project at the Amsterdam Center for Linguistics and Communication (ACLC). I hope to bring this project to an end in 2012.

 

I will examine both language and other aspects of cognition in children with ADHD, following the predictions of the executive functioning theory. Language in children with ADHD will be analysed in the areas of morphology and syntax on the one hand and pragmatics on the other hand, using data from a narrative task and language test data. These data will subsequently be linked to performance on cognitive tasks. The relationship between language performance and cognitive performance should thus be illuminated.

 

The resulting profile of children with ADHD will be compared to similar profiles from other populations: (1) children with SLI, (2) children with a normal development. This will be done in order to be able to identify possible specific language features and their possible relationship to cognitive abilities.
